Workshop on Translation at Hugo House

The Art and Practice of Literary Translation
A one-day workshop at Hugo House in Seattle
www.hugohouse.org/classes/

Translators work with language just as writers do, but with a focus on interpreting content—not creating it directly, but recreating it in new words. In this class, part discussion group and part how-to, we’ll look at writings about literary translation and read translated texts from different languages. We’ll also consider the question of becoming a translator, from courses to take and professional organizations to join to how to choose texts and where to get published.

With the Lapps in the High Mountains

The wonderful environmental literary magazine Orion has just published two excerpts from my translation from the Danish of Emilie Demant Hatt's book about her 1907-8 travels with the Sami in Lapland: With the Lapps in the High Mountains.

You can read them online at http://www.orionmagazine.org/index.php/articles/article/3244
